In which year did Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar lead the Mahad Satyagraha?
- A.1918
- B.1923
- C.1925
- D.1927
Solution
Ambedkar's social movements
Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar led the Mahad Satyagraha in 1927, on 20 March.
He marched with thousands of Dalits to the Chavdar Tank at Mahad in Raigad district of Maharashtra and drank its water, asserting that a public water source belongs to every citizen - the day is now observed as Social Empowerment Day.
1923 is the tempting year, because that is when the Bombay Legislative Council passed the Bole Resolution throwing public water places open to Dalits; Mahad in 1927 was the act of enforcing on the ground a right that had only existed on paper.
