Ambedkar's social movements Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar led the Mahad Satyagraha in 1927, on 20 March. He marched with thousands of Dalits to the Chavdar Tank at Mahad in Raigad district of Maharashtra and drank its water, asserting that a public water source belongs to every citizen - the day is now observed as Social Empowerment Day. 1923 is the tempting year, because that is when the Bombay Legislative Council passed the Bole Resolution throwing public water places open to Dalits; Mahad in 1927 was the act of enforcing on the ground a right that had only existed on paper.

Algae classification Chara is the green alga, of the family Characeae, that is commonly called stonewort. It is mistaken for a plant because its body is anchored by rhizoids and carries whorls of leaf-like branches on a stem-like axis; lime (calcium carbonate) encrusts that body, which is where the 'stone' in stonewort comes from. The other three are not green algae at all - kelp and Sargassum are brown algae and Gracilaria is a red alga, so none of them can answer a question that asks for a green alga.

UNESCO intangible heritage Durga Puja in Kolkata was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2021. It was India's 14th entry on that list, and the citation is worth remembering: UNESCO honoured it as an urban, public art event - the pandals, clay idols, lighting and street installations that turn a whole city into a gallery for five days. Jamai Shashti, Poila Baisakh and Poush Sankranti are all genuine Bengali festivals, which is what makes them tempting; none of them, however, carries a UNESCO inscription.

Green Revolution impact The Green Revolution decreased India's dependence on food imports. From the mid-1960s, high-yielding varieties of wheat and rice, assured irrigation, chemical fertilisers and a guaranteed minimum support price raised output so sharply that a country living on PL-480 wheat shipments from the United States became self-sufficient in food grains within about a decade. 'Stopped food imports completely' is the trap: India still imports pulses and edible oils, so the accurate word is 'decreased', not 'stopped'.

Water bodies A reservoir is the human-made water body formed by blocking the flow of a river or stream with a dam. Gobind Sagar exists only because the Bhakra Dam holds back the Satluj - remove the dam and the lake disappears, which is exactly what 'human-made' means here. The other three are natural: an oxbow lake is a river meander cut off from the channel, an estuary is the mouth where a river's fresh water meets the sea, and a lagoon is shallow water shut off from the sea by a sandbar or coral reef.

State film awards The Nandi Awards, which include the award for the best choreographer, are presented every year by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. Fix them by their name: they are called after the Nandi bull of the Lepakshi temple in Andhra Pradesh, they were instituted in 1964 to honour Telugu cinema, theatre and television, and their grades are Swarnam (gold), Rajatam (silver), Kamsyam (bronze) and Raagi (copper). Telugu films are made in Hyderabad, which now lies in Telangana, and that is what makes a wrong pick tempting - but the Nandi is the older undivided Andhra Pradesh state award and none of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh or Karnataka gives one.

Million-plus cities Among the neighbours listed, Pakistan has the highest number of million cities. A 'million city' is an urban agglomeration whose population crosses ten lakh; Pakistan has about ten of them - Karachi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Peshawar, Multan, Hyderabad, Islamabad and Quetta. Bangladesh is the tempting answer because it is far more densely populated than Pakistan, but density is not the same as urban size: its people live largely in villages and small towns, and only Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and a couple of Dhaka's satellite cities cross a million. Nepal and Sri Lanka each have essentially one such agglomeration, around Kathmandu and Colombo, so they are never in this contest.

Article 166 - State executive Article 166(3) of the Constitution says that the Governor shall make rules for the more convenient transaction of the business of the Government of a State, and for the allocation of that business among the Ministers. Read Article 166 as one chain: clause (1) - all executive action is expressed in the name of the Governor; clause (2) - orders are authenticated in the manner the Governor's rules prescribe; clause (3) - the Governor frames those rules. Article 77(3) gives the President exactly the same power at the Union level. The Chief Minister is the tempting answer because he heads the Council of Ministers whose advice the Governor acts on, and the Chief Secretary is the officer who runs the machinery day to day - but the rules of business are formally made by the Governor.

World Athletics Championships Neeraj Chopra became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, taking the men's javelin throw title at Budapest in 2023 with a throw of 88.17 m. That gold completed a collection he had already begun - World U-20 gold in 2016, Asian Games gold in 2018, Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020 and silver at the 2022 World Championships in Oregon. Anju Bobby George is the trap: she won India's first ever medal at these championships, a long jump bronze at Paris in 2003, but the question asks for gold.

Indian fusion music Both tracks are by Ananda Shankar. He was the sitar-playing composer who fused Indian classical music with Western rock and funk; the two pieces come from his 1975 record Ananda Shankar and His Music, and their drum-and-sitar grooves are still sampled by DJs around the world. Place him in his family and he is easy to keep straight: he was the son of the dancer Uday Shankar and the nephew of Pandit Ravi Shankar. Anoushka Shankar is the tempting option because she is also a Shankar and also a sitarist - but she is Ravi Shankar's daughter and belongs to a later generation; Begum Akhtar sang ghazal and thumri, and Zakir Hussain is a tabla maestro, so neither has an instrumental fusion track to their name here.

Rohingya refugee crisis The Rohingya are a stateless Muslim minority of Rakhine State in Myanmar, so the crisis concerns refugees from Myanmar. Myanmar's 1982 citizenship law left them without nationality, and after the military crackdown of August 2017 more than seven lakh of them crossed borders in a matter of weeks - most into the Cox's Bazar camps, a much smaller number into India. Bangladesh is the trap, because it hosts by far the largest Rohingya population - but it is the country they fled to, not the country they are from.

Classical dance forms Bharatanatyam is the ekaharya form - eka (one) dancer carries all the characters of the story in a single performance. The classical description is 'ekaharya lasyangam': the same dancer becomes Krishna, then Radha, then the narrator, changing role only through abhinaya - facial expression and hand gesture - with no change of costume and no second performer. Kuchipudi is the tempting option because it too has famous solos, but it grew out of the Bhagavata Mela dance-drama in which a whole troupe plays separate parts; Kathakali is likewise a group drama with each actor in one elaborate role. Bharatanatyam belongs to Tamil Nadu, was earlier called Sadir Attam or Dasiattam when performed by devadasis in temples, and was revived under its present name by E. Krishna Iyer and Rukmini Devi Arundale.

Green Revolution outcomes A decrease in rural population was NOT an outcome of the Green Revolution. The package of high-yielding seeds, chemical fertilisers, pesticides and tube-well irrigation did raise food-grain output, did tie farming to bought chemical inputs, and did build up mandis, warehouses, canals and rural roads - so (a), (b) and (c) all happened. What it did not do was empty the villages: the new cropping pattern demanded more labour per hectare, so rural employment and rural population in Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh rose rather than fell, and migrant workers came in from Bihar and eastern UP to meet the demand. For the exam, pair the names - M.S. Swaminathan is called the Father of the Green Revolution in India, Norman Borlaug worldwide.

Constituent Assembly The Constituent Assembly met for the first time on 9 December 1946, in the Constitution Hall - today the Central Hall of Parliament - in New Delhi. Only 207 members attended, as the Muslim League boycotted the sitting and pressed for a separate constituent assembly; Dr Sachchidananda Sinha, the oldest member, took the chair as temporary President. Hold the December dates as a chain: 9 December 1946 the first sitting, 11 December Dr Rajendra Prasad elected permanent President, 13 December Nehru moved the Objectives Resolution - and 26 November 1949 the Constitution was finally adopted.

Public provision Public provision means goods and services that are financed through the government budget and can be used without any direct payment. A government school, a primary health centre, a public park or a village road is paid for out of taxes, so the user pays nothing at the point of use - that single feature is what separates public provision from a service you buy in the market. Option (c) is the tempting one because taxes do fund these services, but the whole purpose of public provision is universal access: a landless labourer who pays no income tax may still walk into the health centre.

Shunga dynasty The last Shunga ruler, Devabhuti, was killed by his own minister Vasudeva Kanva in about 73 BCE, which falls in the 1st century BC. Note the symmetry the examiner is testing: the dynasty began the same way it ended. In about 185 BCE the commander-in-chief Pushyamitra Shunga killed the last Mauryan emperor Brihadratha; in 73 BCE a minister killed the last Shunga and founded the Kanva dynasty. The 2nd century BC is the trap, because 185 BCE - the founding of the dynasty - does lie there; the question asks about the end of the line, not its beginning. Century-counting for BC dates runs backwards: 100-1 BCE is the 1st century BC and 200-101 BCE is the 2nd, so 73 BCE is 1st century BC.

Boilers Bill, 2024 The Boilers Bill, 2024 seeks to replace the Boilers Act, 1923. It was introduced in the Rajya Sabha on 8 August 2024 and passed by that House on 4 December 2024, re-enacting a colonial statute that regulates the manufacture, installation, inspection, use and repair of boilers - a boiler being a closed vessel in which steam is generated under pressure. Its main change is decriminalisation: of the offences under the old Act only four, those that endanger life or limb, remain criminal and the rest become monetary penalties, in line with the Jan Vishwas approach to ease of doing business. The other years look plausible, but 1923 is the one to hold on to - it is why every news report called the law 'century-old'.

States of matter At room temperature and pressure iron is a solid, and particles in a solid have the least kinetic energy - so iron is the answer. Kinetic energy is simply the energy of particle motion: in a solid the particles only vibrate about fixed positions, in a liquid they slide past one another, and in a gas they fly about freely, so the order is solid < liquid < gas. Water and kerosene are liquids at room temperature and methane is a gas, so the particles in all three move more than iron's do.

Sports personalities Smriti Mandhana is a cricketer - the left-handed opening batter of the India women's team, from Sangli in Maharashtra. She won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Award for ICC Women's Cricketer of the Year in 2018 and 2021, was named ICC Women's ODI Cricketer of the Year for 2024, and captains Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Women's Premier League. The other three sports have their own familiar Indian names - Vinesh Phogat in wrestling, Rani Rampal in hockey and P.V. Sindhu in badminton - and Mandhana is not among them.

Union Council of Ministers As of September 2024 the Cabinet Minister heading the Union Ministry of Education was Dharmendra Pradhan. He first took charge of the ministry in July 2021 - a year after the old Ministry of Human Resource Development was renamed the Ministry of Education under NEP 2020 - and returned to the same portfolio when the Council of Ministers was sworn in in June 2024. The other three held different portfolios at that time: Nitin Gadkari Road Transport and Highways, Piyush Goyal Commerce and Industry, and H.D. Kumaraswamy Heavy Industries and Steel.
