Every exam our universities accept — who conducts it, who can apply, what the paper looks like, and which universities take the score.
University-conducted entrance tests
Many universities run their own entrance test alongside or instead of the national examinations — deemed and private universities in particular. Formats, syllabi and calendars differ from one institution to the next, so the university's own admission page is the authority on dates and eligibility.
Joint Entrance Examination (Main)
JEE Main is the national entrance test for undergraduate engineering and architecture admission in India. It is the qualifying route to NITs, IIITs and centrally funded technical institutions, is accepted by a large number of state and private universities, and is the screening stage for JEE Advanced.
University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test
UGC-NET determines eligibility for Assistant Professor posts and for the Junior Research Fellowship, and is now also used by many universities as an entrance route to Ph.D. programmes.
Common Admission Test
CAT is the entrance test for the IIMs and is accepted by most leading business schools and university management departments in India. Scores are reported as percentiles, and institutions publish their own sectional and overall cut-offs.
Common University Entrance Test (Postgraduate)
CUET-PG is the common entrance test for master's programmes at central and participating universities, covering a wide spread of subject-specific papers from sciences and humanities to management and law.
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate)
NEET-UG is the single entrance test for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and allied undergraduate medical courses across India. No medical college may admit an undergraduate student outside it, which makes it the largest entrance examination in the country by candidate numbers.
Common University Entrance Test (Undergraduate)
CUET-UG is the common entrance route to undergraduate programmes at central universities and a growing number of state, deemed and private universities. It replaced separate board-marks cut-offs at many institutions, so one score can be used across dozens of applications.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering
GATE tests comprehensive understanding of undergraduate engineering and science subjects. The score is used for M.Tech and Ph.D. admission with MHRD scholarships, for direct recruitment by several public sector undertakings, and increasingly for research fellowships.
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Postgraduate)
NEET-PG is the qualifying and ranking examination for MD, MS and PG diploma seats in medical colleges across India.
Common Law Admission Test
CLAT is the entrance test for the National Law Universities and is accepted by a number of other law schools. It covers integrated five-year undergraduate law programmes and one-year LL.M. programmes.
Joint Admission Test for Masters
JAM is the admission test for M.Sc. and joint degree programmes at the IITs, IISc and several NITs and centrally funded institutions, covering the core sciences.
Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced)
JEE Advanced is the admission test for the Indian Institutes of Technology and a handful of other institutions. Only candidates who clear the JEE Main cut-off may sit it, which makes it one of the most selective undergraduate examinations anywhere.
